*See below for a seasonal watering schedule.
Spring thru May
Suggested spring watering for new plantings requires:
- 10 minutes for plants and shrubs everyday for the first two weeks
- 10 minutes for plants and shrubs four times per week from week three on
- Water at the base of the plant
- Do not overhead water meaning no water applied directly to foliage
- Overhead watering creates leaf curl and leaf burn
- Adjust watering schedule according to weather
Drought=water more
Rain=water less
Suggested spring watering for new trees requires:
- Filling ring around tree daily for the first two weeks
- Filling ring around tree every other day from week three on
- Adjust watering schedule according to weather
- Suggested spring watering for new lawns requires:
Sod:
- Water sunny areas for 20 minutes in the morning daily for the first two weeks
- Water shady areas for 10 minutes in the morning daily for the first two weeks
- After week two continue same watering times but change to every other day
Seed:
- Water sunny areas for 25 minutes in the morning daily for the first two weeks
- Water shady areas for 15 minutes in the morning daily for the first two weeks
- After week two continue same watering times but change to every other day
- Both sod and seed require adequate moisture and you must monitor your watering. If puddling occurs or the ground is very wet cut down on watering times a bit.
- The object is to keep the sod/seed moist, not saturated. Saturation will lead to root rot which will eventually lead to the deterioration of your new lawn.
- Watering should be completed before 10 am otherwise the new lawn becomes highly susceptible to contracting an irreversible fungus.
Summer-June thru September
Suggested watering schedule for summer required:
- Shrubs and bushes can be watered the same as above only add 5 extra minutes to the watering time.
- Trees can be watered the same but continue filling rings daily for three weeks instead of two, then change to an every other day watering schedule.
- Sod/seed can be watered the same as above only add 10 extra minutes to the times for both sunny and shady areas.
- Sod/seed can be watered daily for the first three weeks in the summer then switch to every other day schedule.
- Summertime watering should be done daily if we are having drought conditions.
- Summertime especially important, all watering to be completed before 10 am.
Fall-Oct-Dec.
Suggested watering schedule for fall into winter requires:
- All watering procedures for shrubs, bushes, trees and lawns should follow the same requirements as the spring watering schedule.
- Watering can be tapered off as temperatures begin to dip below the freezing mark.
- All watering to be completed before 10am.
Flower Pots
Suggested watering procedures for pots and annuals requires:
- Pots should be watered thoroughly on a daily basis to ensure bright, robust flowers
- It is important to make sure your pots have proper drainage to prevent root rot
- DO NOT water annuals in pots with cold tap water during the hot part of the day as all petals will drop due to shocking hot petals with cold water.
- You may also contact your sprinkler company to add drip lines to all pots or we can have this done for you.
Perennial Gardens
Suggested watering procedures for perennials requires:
- Perennials should be watered three times per week for 15 minutes in the spring and fall.
- In the summer, perennials should be watered 4 times per week for 20 minutes.
- Adjust watering times to the weather conditions.
- Perennials like annuals need to be watered before 10am to prevent fungal attacks and should never be watered during the middle of the day. If watering occurs at high noon (which should never be done) what happens is you are spraying cold water on a hot plant and it burns the leaves which essentially leads to petal drop.
